Blocktober Project
This was a project I worked on during last year's Blocktober. Inspired by games like Resident Evil 4 Remake and Alan Wake 2, the goal was to practice techniques from readings and apply them to a whitebox.
Genre: Third-person, Action
Development Time: October 2023
Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Project Goals
For this project, I wanted to practice whiteboxing on a level. I am a big fan of Blocktober and wanted a project where I could apply the practices from the books I read over the summer. The goal was to create a third-person action level where the player would explore a city and make their way to the graveyard at the top of the area.

As always, I begin with a quick sketch of my idea for the space. This helps me decide the critical and non-critical paths for the level and what areas I can place optional objectives for the players. Once I get into the engine, I begin mapping out the playspace. This helped with level metrics and what could be changed from the initial sketch.
Once I started adding more complex shapes to the whitebox, I wanted to ask myself the following:
-
Am I presenting a clear objective?
-
Am I motivating movement by blocking sight lines of certain paths?
-
If this were a larger project, does this layout communicate important gameplay information to the team?
-
Am I framing landmarks and creating pinch points effectively?
Overall, I believe I accomplished what I set out to do. While I would have loved more time to work on this project, I started development on Syke and shifted my focus there. Below are some screenshots of what I was able to finish. Thank you for checking this page out.
